TYPES OF OOP

Time out for clinical training in the UK or abroad which is not part of your training program (e.g. secondment to another training programme, a Fellowship post) . 

  • usually 1 year max

  • can be full time or part time

  • counts towards CCT – hence no delay to CCT date

  • needs prospective GMC approval

This is not the same as dual/triple accrediting with ICM.

Time out for research purposes (e.g. Master's, PhD)

  • does not normally exceed 3 years but may be extended at the discretion of the TPD (Training Programme Director)

  • may/may not count towards award of CCT 

  • NB: applications for an OOPR are normally not considered in the final year of training

Time out for other interests (e.g. entrepreneurship, work in industry domestic responsibilities)

  • Usually limited to 2 years max

  • Considered on individual merit

This should not be used for sickness or parental leave.

A specific type of OOP (Training) where final year trainees "act up" as a consultant prior to CCT. â€‹

  • usually 3 months max

  • should be a vacant funded consultant post in the UK 

  • trainee is on the consultant rota but retains support from ES

  • needs approval from TPD, unit where trainee is on trainee rota and unit where trainee would be acting up

This is not the same as a locum consultant post.

Time out for experience  (e.g. medical leadership, education, voluntary service overseas)

  • Usually 1 year max

  • Does not count towards CCT

​Time to step out of formal training – no need to give a reason

  • Currently limited to 1 year

  • If any competencies gained whilst out of training, can be assessed on return in order to see if can contribute to CCT

  • Instituted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic
