This is a guide to the many grants out there that you can apply to to fund your research. This list is by no means exhaustive and is focused on training fellowships. If you'd like to get in touch with the recipient of the grant to ask for guidance, do let us know.

Medical Research Council / UKRI

Clinical Research Training Fellowship

Apply for funding to undertake a PhD or to reacquire research skills. Your research can focus on any area of MRC’s remit to improve human health.

You must be a registered healthcare professional, either:

planning to undertake a PhD or similar
a PhD graduate working outside of research, usually five or more years ago.

NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship

The NIHR Doctoral Fellowship is a three year full-time award that supports individuals to undertake a PhD in applied health or social care research. This fellowship may also be taken up on a part-time basis of between 50% and 100% whole time equivalent (WTE).

Clinical applicants are able to include up to 20% clinical time as part of the fellowship, to ensure the maintenance of their clinical competence whilst undertaking the fellowship.

Fellowships & PhD Studentships

Wellcome Trust PhD Fellowships for Health Professionals

Wellcome’s PhD Programmes for Health Professionals offer health professionals outstanding research training in supportive and inclusive research environments. Fellowships supported through these programmes aim to create knowledge, build research capability and train a diverse group of future leaders in clinical academia, within a positive research culture.
